How to Use a Lace Mold
Wedding cakes with lace patterns on them are very popular right now. Using a lace silicone mold is one way you can achieve an all over lace design, lace border, or just a few lace accents. Lace molds can be used with either rolled fondant or gum paste and come in many exquisite styles and designs. These molds are usually on the more expensive side, but are well worth the investment. The molds are fairly easy to use, but may require some extra patience and practice to get the pieces looking perfect.
Here’s how to use them:
Step 1: Dust the mold with a pearl or luster dust if a pearlized look is desired. If not, dust the lace mold with cornstarch.
Step 2: Roll out the fondant or gum paste so that it is about 1/8″ thick and large enough to cover the entire mold. Place the fondant onto the bottom piece of the mold.
Step 3: Using your finger, press the fondant down into the silicone candle mold.
Step 4: Place the top piece (or pieces for this particular mold) on top of the bottom piece, lining up the edges.
Step 5: Starting at one end, roll over the mold with a lot of pressure using a rolling-pin.
Step 6: Tear the excess fondant away from the mold.
